India will extend a tight nationwide lockdown that was implemented last month to avoid the spread of coronavirus, a lead official has said.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a video conference with ministers of state, and many of them urged the government to extend the lockdown.
Delhi’s chief minister said Mr. Modi decided to extend the lockdown, without giving any details, the lockdown was set to end on Tuesday.
The extended lockdown comes amid concerns about how the lockdown has affected the country’s poorest citizens.
In India, the spread of the virus has varied, with some states reporting larger increases in cases.
According to a report by US-based Johns Hopkins University, which studies the disease internationally, India has reported over 8,000 infections and 288 deaths as of the time of writing. Nevertheless, the real figures are assumed to be much larger.
Mr. Modi described the next three to four weeks as “critical” in the assessment of the effects of the actions taken so far.
