France: Approximately 700 sailors assigned to the naval division of French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle have tested positive for coronavirus, the French Armed Forces Ministry announced.

The ministry said 1767 marines, almost all of whom were from the Charles de Gaulle itself, had been screened, and tests indicated that at least 668 were diagnosed with the novel coronavirus. Although, results are still not in from a third of the tests.

A later statement by the ministry said:

Thirty-one personnel are today in hospital,

More tests are being carried out.

The carrier, which had engaged most recently in Baltic Sea drills with northern European navies, arrived home in Toulon, France, two weeks earlier than planned after some 40 crew members exhibited COVID-19 symptoms.

Members of the ill crew had been put under close medical supervision on board the nuclear-powered vessel.

The crew of the Charles de Gaulle crew and the Chevalier Paul frigate are now in isolation inside their naval base, along with the crews of their warplanes and helicopters,

The navy chief had requested an investigation, the ministry noted.
