Next month, the European Commission will propose a set of guidelines for the safe reopening of air transport, including social distance at airports and planes, while some U.S. airlines are taking their own protective measures.

Adina Valean, EU Transport Commissioner, said Wednesday that the steps being discussed would include wearing masks and disinfecting planes and airports.

Valean announced on Twitter:

“All this should be part of those guidelines and probably by mid-May we can put forward this strategy we are working on,”

The decision came as controversy heated up in the U.S. about whether to apply regulations on social distancing or protective gear to air travel.
