On Monday, President Donald Trump announced that in response to the coronavirus pandemic, and to protect American employment, he would immediately suspend all immigration into the United States through an executive order.

The step was announced on Twitter by the Republican president, and will essentially complete a long-term Trump policy goal to curb immigration, using the health and economic crisis that has ravaged the world to do so as a result of the pandemic.

The decision drew immediate criticism from certain Democrats, who accused the president of distracting people from what they perceived as a sluggish and flawed response to the coronavirus.

Trump claimed he was taking these steps to protect American workers. Millions of Americans are suffering unemployment as companies are losing workers amid national lockdowns to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
