On Sunday, the Australian government unveiled a controversial coronavirus tracking application and vowed to legislate for it on privacy rights while policymakers are seeking to bring the world and economy back to normal.

Australia and New Zealand have managed to contain their coronavirus outbreaks before straining the public health infrastructure, although authorities in both countries remain concerned about the possibility of another flare-up.

Greg Hunt, Australia’s health minister, said in a televised briefing:

“We are winning, but we have not yet won,”

The software, which is based on TraceTogether tech from Singapore, uses signals from Bluetooth to monitor when people are close to each other. Human rights advocates have opposed it as a violation of privacy.

The Australian government, who wants 40 per-cent of the population to sign up to make the initiative successful, has said that the voluntary app is safe.

The contact data stored in the app will allow health officials to track individuals who have been exposed to the virus.
