On Tuesday, the number of confirmed U.S. coronavirus cases neared 1 million while the projected American death toll rose in a closely watched academic model, even as some states eased restrictions aimed at fighting the coronavirus pandemic that is battering the economy.

Economic advisor to President Donald Trump has estimated an unemployment rate of over 16 percent in April as many Americans are fraying under lockdown orders, and over a dozen states struggle to restore their devastated economies amid a lack of large-scale virus control.

Public health experts have cautioned that a premature rollback of social distancing measures aimed at curbing the spread of coronavirus, could lead to a rise in new infections.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, called for continuity through federal, state, and municipal governments to revive the economy but cautioned against any public-health measures being legislation that might damage companies when they try to rebound.

The amount of confirmed U.S. coronavirus infections, just shy of 1 million, has doubled in 18 days and accounts for a third of all recorded infections worldwide. The true number of infected individuals is presumed to be much higher than government published figures, with state public health authorities reporting shortages of qualified staff and testing equipment.

More than 56,000 Americans have died this month from COVID-19, the virus-caused respiratory disease, with an average of around 2,000 fatalities a day.
