On Wednesday, officials said that Spain’s lockdown is protecting against the latest coronavirus, but next week’s incremental lockdown easing will still require more vigilance, after 325 fatalities from the virus were reported overnight in the region.

The lockdown, one of Europe’s strongest, started on 14 March and has since frozen public life and nearly crippled the economy.

The number of confirmed cases grew by 2,144 from Tuesday to 212,917, the second-highest total in the world after the United States, the ministry said.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, unveiled a four-phase program to lift the lockdown late on Tuesday, which would culminate in a return to normal by the end of June.

The ease of lockdown measures will vary from province to province based on conditions such as whether the infection rate is growing, the number of intensive care beds locally available, and compliance with distancing rules. Those targets are yet to be announced.

Health Minister, Salvador Illa, said the rules on visiting friends and family would be available in the coming days.
