Tesla to prolong furlough by another week for certain employees

On Friday, Tesla Inc told furloughed workers that they would stay out of work for at least another week, postponing a proposal to restart regular operations on May 4 at its car assembly plant in San Francisco, according to an online email.

On 24 March, Tesla halted production at its plant in Fremont, California.

The extension came days after San Francisco County health authorities, along with five other counties in the Bay Area, announced that they would review “shelter-in-place” orders, which are due to expire on Sunday.

The latest orders would retain and expand the prohibitions until May, with limited easing for a small number of low-risk activities.

Last month, the electric carmaker furloughed its non-essential employees and imposed pay reductions owing to the coronavirus outbreak after a shutdown of its U.S. manufacturing facilities.
