To avoid a second peak of the coronavirus pandemic, Britain is to introduce a 14-day quarantine period for almost everyone arriving in the country, The Times newspaper reported on Saturday.

The report said that on Sunday, in an address to the nation, Prime Minister, Boris Johnson will say that passengers arriving at airports and ports, including Britons returning from abroad, will have to self-isolate for 14 days.

As reported by the Times, travelers will have to provide the address at which they will self-isolate upon arrival under measures that are likely to come into force in early June.

The Times quoted a government source as saying:

“These measures will help protect the British public and reduce the transmission of the virus as we move into the next phase of our response,”

On Sunday, Johnson is set to announce the next steps in Britain’s fight to combat the novel coronavirus after ministers review the latest measures that have all but shut down the economy and kept millions at home for more than six weeks.

UK airport operators have said that they are worrying that a quarantine would cause even more damage to the already damaged aviation sector as it would put people off flying until limits on lockdowns are removed.

The report also said that authorities would be performing spot checks, and anyone caught breaking the rule would face penalties of up to 1,000 pounds or possibly even deportation.
