On Sunday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the coronavirus lockdown is not yet coming to an end, advising people to “stay alert” to the risks as he announced plans to gradually begin relaxing lockdown measures that have put a heavy burden on the economy.
Johnson proposed a limited easing of limitations in a televised speech, including allowing people to exercise more regularly outdoors and allowing some people to return to work.
Johnson said in his televised address:
“This is not the time simply to end the lockdown,”
“Instead we are taking the first careful steps to modify our measures.”
With both the mortality rate and hospital admissions falling, allowing for a second increase in infections will be “madness,” Johnson said.
Johnson said people would be able to keep working from home if they can, but those who can’t, including people working in construction and manufacturing, should be actively encouraged to go to work.
Starting from Wednesday, Johnson said that people would be able to begin taking unrestricted quantities of outdoor exercise, relax in the sun in their local park, travel to other destinations, and play sports with members of their household.
Before now, people were advised to exercise once a day outside and do so locally. Social distancing laws must continue to be obeyed, Johnson said.
