On Saturday, Tesla chief executive, Elon Musk, tweeted that Tesla would immediately move its headquarters and future programs from California to Texas or possibly Nevada.

Musk wrote on Twitter, referring to Tesla’s only U.S. factory:

“If we even retain Fremont manufacturing activity at all, it will be dependen (sp) on how Tesla is treated in the future,”

Elon Musk also tweeted that he would be suing Alameda County, California after the health department said that the electric carmaker must not reopen the Fremont factory local lockdown measures continue to stay in place to curb the spread of coronavirus.

On Saturday, Alameda County said it was collaborating with Tesla to create a safety plan that “allows reopening while protecting the health and well-being of the thousands of employees” employed at the factory and that it looks forward to coming to an understanding on a safety plan quite soon.

On Thursday, Musk had informed workers that limited production would resume on Friday afternoon at the Fremont factory.

Tesla produces more than 415,000 vehicles a year at the Fremont factory, so it will be a huge undertaking to move the entire assembly factory.

The decision to move the plant also comes as Tesla looks to speed up the production of its Model Y sport utility vehicle at Fremont, the most profitable vehicle to date for Tesla.

Gavin Newsom, California Governor, had said Thursday that the state would allow factories to reopen. Although, Alameda County, where the Fremont factory is located, will keep the lockdown restrictions in place until the end of May with only essential companies being permitted to reopen.
