Russia overtakes Britain and Italy in overall coronavirus cases after a dramatic rise in cases

On Monday, Russia’s coronavirus cases exceeded Italian and British infections to become the world’s third-highest after a dramatic increase of daily cases just before President Vladimir Putin was set to review the country’s current lockdown restrictions.

The official infection toll climbed to 221,344, indicating that Russia now has more confirmed cases than Italy and Britain and is now creeping up on Spain and the United States, as the number of reported coronavirus cases increased by 11,656 over the past 24 hours.

More than half of all cases and deaths occurred in Moscow, which is the epicenter of the virus in Russia. 6,169 new cases were confirmed overnight on Monday, taking its official total to 115,909.

The response center for coronavirus in the country also confirmed 94 new deaths, raising the death toll in the country to 2,009.
