Spain: Daily coronavirus death toll below 100 for the first time in 2 months

On Sunday, the health ministry announced that Spain’s daily coronavirus death toll dropped below 100 for the first time in two months, as some areas of the country were planning for a further easing of the lockdown currently in place.

Total deaths from the virus increased by 87 to 27,650, while the number of confirmed cases increased from 230,698 to 231,350, the ministry said.

On March 14, Spain implemented one of Europe’s most strict lockdowns to suppress the coronavirus pandemic that could overtake the health service in the region.

Since the population remained largely restricted to their homes, the rate of new cases and deaths has dropped consistently, leading the government to start easing the coronavirus lockdown.

If the government continues to loosen limits on travel, officials are considering expanding the compulsory wearing of face masks on public transport.

Over the past week, protests have flared up across the nation, with frustrated citizens expressing their anger at the treatment of the outbreak by the Spanish Government.
