On Friday, the World Health Organization announced that Africa has registered over 100,000 cases of the novel coronavirus, with the virus being spread to every country on the Continent.

In Africa, 3,100 have died from the virus.

Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa, said in a statement:

“For now Covid-19 has made a soft landfall in Africa, and the continent has been spared the high numbers of deaths which have devastated other regions of the world,”

Dr. Mike Ryan, WHO executive director of Health Emergencies Programme, also said at the briefing:

“On the one hand, good news — the disease hasn’t taken off in a very fast trajectory, but (there’s) a concern some countries are accelerating in the number of cases.”

African governments implemented social distancing measures, including social distancing, promptly after the virus entered the Continent, which the WHO said helped slow the virus transmission.
