Two days after Brazil became the world’s No. 2 hot spot for coronavirus cases, the White House announced that it was prohibiting most non-U.S. citizens from traveling to the United States, if they had been in Brazil in the last two weeks.

Kayleigh McEnany, White House Press Secretary, said the new regulations would better ensure foreign visitors will not carry more infections to the United States, although it will not apply to the flow of commerce between the two countries.

On Friday, Brazil passed Russia as the world’s second-largest hotspot for coronavirus infections, behind the United States, and now has more than 347,000 citizens diagnosed with the virus, the Ministry of Health reported.

The new limitations will prevent most non-U.S. Citizens who visited Brazil in the last 14 days from entering the United States. People exempt from the regulation would be green card holders, close relatives of U.S. citizens, flight crew members, and select others.
