On Wednesday, Australia reported the youngest COVID-19 fatality, after a 30-year-old man with existing health problems died in the state of Queensland, displaying signs of the disease for weeks but not getting tested.
The latest case, from over 7,100 confirmed cases, takes the death toll in Australia to 103. Australia has been one of the most successful countries with containing the spread of coronavirus, which officials contribute to social distancing, travel restrictions, and mass testing.
Authorities are tracking a potential connection between the man and the Ruby Princess cruise ship that docked in March in Sydney and was responsible for Australia’s largest outbreak of the virus, state officials from Queensland announced.
State Premier, Anastasia Palaszczuk, said in a statement:
“He was showing symptoms prior to his death but also had other illnesses. He tested positive in the post mortem. His partner is now sick with symptoms. She is now being isolated,”
Medics and Police who assisted the man are now undergoing self-isolation.
