On Thursday, domestic media reported that Japan is unlikely to adjust its academic year to begin in September rather than April either in 2020 or 2021, amid demands for changes that advocates claim will further internationalize the education system of the country.

In March, schools closed in Japan due to the coronavirus pandemic, fueling concern over the shorter academic year and re-igniting debate about starting the academic year in September, like many Western countries.

High-profile politicians such as Tokyo Governor, Yuriko Koike supported reforms, and a panel was set up by the Liberal Democratic Party to review options.

Supporters have said starting the academic year in September would make studying abroad easier for Japanese college students. Critics also listed various barriers and suggested the emphasis would be on getting students to keep up with work by working online.
