Fitbit reportedly working on Google Assistant support

Fitbit is currently focusing on bringing Google Assistant support to Fitbit watches. The latest development arrives amid the continuing uncertainty around the Fitbit contract with Google. If true, then Fitbit will be the first wearable third-party company to integrate Google Assistant into its devices. Code appears to suggest that Google Assistant support for Fitbit Versa 2 is in the works inside the latest version of the Fitbit app.

9to5Google decompiled the Google Play Store’s latest version of the Fitbit Android app, and the code indicates that the company is planning to add Google Assistant support. The code retrieved from the app has strings for activating Assistant in the same way as Amazon Alexa. Fitbit’s Versa 2 already supports Amazon’s integration with Alexa and is equipped with a microphone to record voice commands. The code also shows a trio of XML files, specifically pointing to how Google Assistant would be implemented.

The article also states that the app strings detail that you can only have one active assistant at a time, although you can always switch to another assistant at any time. Google Assistant will reportedly be launched on the Variety 2 smartwatch first. The device does not have a speaker, which means that the answers can only be received via the smartwatch interface. A physical button has to be pressed to activate Google Assistant.

In November last year, Google announced it was acquiring Fitbit for $2.1 billion, although the transaction has been awaiting regulatory approval ever since.
