On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office announced that beginning July 24, shoppers in England will have to wear face coverings in stores and supermarkets to prevent a rise in coronavirus infections.
Last week, Boris Johnson said stricter guidelines on wearing face coverings might be needed, although, on Sunday, a senior minister-Cabinet Secretary Michael Gove-said wearing masks would be left to the common sense of citizens instead.
A spokesperson for Johnson’s Downing Street office said:
“The prime minister has been clear that people should be wearing face coverings in shops and we will make this mandatory from July 24,”
Shoppers who fail to wear a face mask will incur a fine of up to 100 pounds, which will decrease to 50 pounds if paid within 14 days.
