On Monday, coronavirus infections soared over 13 million globally, increasing by one million in just five days.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Chief of the World Health Organisation, said that for the near future, there would not be a return to the old normal, with too many countries continuing to head in the wrong direction.
Tedros told a virtual briefing from WHO headquarters in Geneva:
“The virus remains public enemy number one,”
“If basics are not followed, the only way this pandemic is going to go, it is going to get worse and worse and worse. But it does not have to be this way.”
During the current first wave of coronavirus infections, areas of the world, particularly the United States with more than 3.3 million reported cases, are now experiencing huge rises in infections, as other countries continue to “flatten the curve” and relax lockdowns.
After a sharp rise in infections, some areas are now implementing a second lockdown, such as Melbourne in Australia and Leicester in England.
Despite a significant increase in infections of COVID-19, U.S. President Donald Trump and other White House officials have claimed that the disease is currently under control and that schools must re-open in autumn.
