France: Second COVID-19 wave possible later this year

On Tuesday, the main scientific body of the government said that a second coronavirus outbreak is extremely likely to reach France in the fall or winter.

French authorities have already begun to reinforce the laws on public hygiene, with cities like Lille, Nice, and Toulouse requiring people to wear face coverings in busy areas.

After relaxing stringent lockdowns that lowered outbreak rates, several European countries are now seeing figures rise again as constraints are relaxed to limit the economic burden caused by the virus.

The French scientific committee said in a statement published by the health ministry:

“The situation is precarious and we could at any moment tip into a scenario that is less under control, like in Spain,”

“It is highly likely that we will experience a second epidemic wave this autumn or winter,”
