On Friday, Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, announced that he would be resigning from his position due to poor health.
Abe told a news conference:
I cannot be prime minister if I cannot make the best decisions for the people. I have decided to step down from my post,
I apologize from the bottom of my heart that despite all of the support from the Japanese people, I am leaving the post with one full year left in my term and in the midst of various policies and coronavirus,
For years, Abe has been battling ulcerative colitis, and after two recent hospital visits in a week, doubt was raised about whether he will hold his position as Prime Minister until the end of his term.
Abe’s resignation will initiate a ruling Liberal Democratic Party leadership race, which will presumably take place within the next two or three weeks, with the winner being formally elected in parliament. After the election has taken place, the winner will hold the position as PM for the remainder of Abe’s term.
