On Thursday, coronavirus infections in Latin America surpassed 7 million, just as countries began seeing a decline in new cases.

The coronavirus pandemic was first confirmed to have reached Latin America on February 26, 2020, after Brazil confirmed its first coronavirus infection in São Paulo, and by April 3, all countries in Latin America had reported at least one infection.

The rise from 6 million to 7 million confirmed coronavirus infections in Latin America happened in just 13 days, two days more than the previous million.

Previously, the World Health Organization said Mexico and other countries in the region needed to increase testing.

The coronavirus pandemic has also put a heavy burden on the Latin American economy. In June, the World Bank predicted that the Caribbean and Latin American would see a GDP contraction of 7.2 percent this year.
