On Monday, after weeks in hospital, former Indian president Pranab Mukherjee, who had tested positive for COVID-19 this month, passed away, aged 84.
Earlier today, New Delhi’s Army Hospital said that after developing a lung infection, Mukherjee went into septic shock. Mukherjee’s condition had been declining since Sunday.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter:
“He has left an indelible mark on the development trajectory of our nation,”
“A scholar par excellence, a towering statesman, he was admired across the political spectrum and by all sections of society.”
