On Tuesday, by planting a cedar tree, the emblem of Lebanon, French President Emmanuel Macron, marked the centenary of Lebanon.

Macron planted the cedar sapling at a forest reserve in the mountains northeast of Beirut.

The Elysée palace of the French president said Macron had planted the tree to display his “confidence in the future of the country.”

During the ceremony, the French air force exhibition team soared overhead, leaving smoke trails of red, white, and green, Lebanon’s national colors.

Previously, Macron visited Beirut to witness the aftermath of the ammonium nitrate explosion that destroyed parts of the Lebanese capital on August 4, which killed more than 190 people and wounded 6,000.

In 1943, Lebanon gained independence.
