On Tuesday, United States President Donald Trump visited Florida to sign an executive order to prolong a prohibition on offshore oil drilling off of Florida’s Gulf Coast, Florida’s Atlantic Coast, Georgia’s coast, and South Carolinas coast until mid-2032.
The existing moratorium already protects Mexico’s Gulf, with Trump saying that the new one would also protect the Atlantic coast. The existing ban in Mexico’s Gulf was set to expire in 2022.
Trump said while speaking in Florida:
“I will sign a presidential order extending the moratorium on offshore drilling on Florida’s Gulf Coast and expanding it to Florida’s Atlantic Coast as well as the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina,”
“Thanks to my administration’s pro-American energy policies we can take this step and the next step while remaining the No. 1 producer of oil and natural gas anywhere in the world,”
