On Friday, Maharashtra’s coronavirus caseload rose to 1 million, with infections rising almost 20,000 daily, inhibiting India’s efforts to turn around an economic downturn that caused a recession of 23.9% in the second quarter of the year.
The sharp rise in infections places Maharashtra on track with Russia, who have recorded 1,051,874 coronavirus infections in total.
In the coming days, India is expected to hit five million confirmed coronavirus cases, putting it just behind the United States.
Maharashtra authorities are powerless to lighten coronavirus constraints, even as the rest of the country begins to re-open the economy.
The high number of infections has been defended by Maharashtra’s health minister, Rajesh Tope, claiming that the state has been testing individuals for the virus much more than other states.
