On Tuesday, Elon Musk outlined a new electric car battery for Tesla far superior to the cells currently in use, with a price tag half that of current models.

Musk said the new cylindrical shaped cells would offer six times more power, 16 percent more driving range, and five times more energy. Musk said production of the cells is approximately 3 years ago.

Musk said at Tesla’s battery day event:

“We do not have an affordable car. That’s something we will have in the future. But we’ve got to get the cost of batteries down,”

The cells will initially be produced on an assembly line near Tesla’s Fremont factory, with a projected output yield by the end of 2021 of 10 gigawatt-hours a year.
