On Thursday, Seoul officials claimed that a South Korean fisheries worker, who was looking to defect to North Korea, went missing from a fishing vessel approximately 10 km south of the Northern Limit Line on Monday before being executed by North Korean soldiers, who then burnt his body.
The South Korean military claimed that the man was interrogated at sea before being shot by soldiers, who then covered the man’s corpse in oil and set it on fire.
It is currently unclear why the 47-year-old man was executed, although evidence suggests he was shot under coronavirus prevention orders.
According to officials,’ shoot-to-kill orders’ were issued to North Korean soldiers earlier in the month to stop the novel coronavirus being introduced into the country.
