On Wednesday, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Foreign Minister Archbishop Paul Gallagher announced that Mike Pompeo’s offer for an audience with the Pope was rejected, and claimed that Pompeo was attempting to pull the Catholic Church into the Nov. 3 presidential election.
The audience rejection came after Mike Pompeo accused the Church of placing his “moral authority’ at risk by renewing an agreement that gives the Pope some say over the appointment of Chinese Bishops.
Gallagher said in a comment:
“Normally when you’re preparing these visits between high-level officials, you negotiate the agenda for what you are going to talk about privately, confidentially. It’s one of the rules of diplomacy,”
