On Thursday, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, announced that she would be meeting with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Belarusian Politician, as EU leaders at the Brussels summit begin to unravel a conflict that has stalled restrictions against the Belarusian government.

Merkel said in a speech:

“If you see the courage of the women on display in the streets there, for a life of freedom and free of corruption, then I can only say: I admire that,”

Merkel emphasized that the German government did not accept the alleged election win of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Aug. 9.

Protests have repeatedly flared up across the Belarusian capital of Minsk over the Aug. 9 presidential election in which Alexander Lukashenko secured a sixth term.

Macron and Merkel, who had previously met two days earlier, will be engaging in an EU summit for leaders on Thursday, primarily dedicated to foreign policy crises that were ignored due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

EU leaders will also focus on the ongoing crisis in Belarus regarding the Aug. 9 election, and according to a leaked summit communique, will show support for “the democratic right of the Belarusian people to elect their president through new free and fair elections without external interference.”
