On Saturday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhan announced new COVID-19 restrictions, including penalties for hiding one’s COVID-19 infection.

Rouhani said in a televised speech:

“Anyone who feels ill and it’s clear to them that they are ill, must not hide their illness,”

Rouhan added that concealing one’s infection will demand “the highest punishment” and will be seen as “the highest offense.”

Rouhani also said that individuals not wearing a face-covering outdoors will face a fine.

Businesses that breach coronavirus restrictions will face severe penalties and fines and may even face closure.

In total, Iran has reported 468,119 coronavirus infections as well as 26,746 fatalities.
