On Wednesday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that COVID-19 travel restrictions would be eased for all countries to help the devastated tourism industry.
Ramaphosa also announced that regular alcohol trading hours would be restored after they were previously restricted on weekends due to hospitals having to deal with alcohol-related accidents amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ramaphosa said in a televised speech:
“We are also opening up international travel to all countries subject to the necessary health protocols and the presentation of a negative COVID-19 certificate,”
“By using rapid tests and strict monitoring we intend to limit the spread of the infection through importation,”
“We expect that these measures will greatly assist businesses in the tourism and hospitality sectors.”
Currently, no specific date has been released by the president for the reopening of international travel.
In total, South Africa has reported 742,394 COVID-19 cases and 20,011 coronavirus related fatalities.
