Over the past years, air pollution has become a widespread concern worldwide, and according to the World Health Organization, an estimated 7 million deaths each year are caused by air pollutes.

Many studies have linked air pollution to dangerous diseases, including heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory diseases, putting a high strain on the health system and economy, costing the world approximately $5 trillion per year.

Now more than ever, governments across the world need to find new methods of reducing air pollution in their country.

One key example of the effects of air pollution is that of Ella Kissi-Debrah. In February 2013, Ella, a nine-year-old girl living in South London, suffered from a fatal cardiac arrest caused by excessive levels of nitrogen dioxide near her home.

Air pollution greatly worsened Ella’s severe asthma, which she had dealt with throughout her life.

Ella’s death serves as a reminder that people worldwide should begin finding ways to reduce their carbon footprint.
