
On Monday, the director-general for the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that governments worldwide need to distribute COVID-19 vaccines speedily and equitably.
Over recent weeks, countries worldwide have been reporting a rise in COVID-19 cases and deaths, prompting many governments to speed up vaccine distribution to prevent excess deaths.
The United States is currently leading global COVID-19 cases with over 22.9 million infections and 383,587 fatalities, although India trails behind with 10.4 million cases and 151,265 deaths. As for the third-highest caseload and death toll, Brazil follows with 8.1 million cases and 203,202 deaths, Russia with 3.4 million cases and 62,273 deaths, and the United Kingdom in fifth with 3.1 million infections and 81,960 deaths.
The novel coronavirus was first discovered in Wuhan, Hubei, China, on Dec. 31, 2019, and has infected more than 90.9 million individuals worldwide, resulting in over 1.9 million fatalities across 218 countries and territories.
