
On Saturday, Armin Laschet was revealed to be the successor of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats party.
In a virtual conference, Laschet defeated businessman Friedrich Merz with 521 votes to 466.
Following the announcement, Mr. Laschet made a victory speech, in which he said that he aims to do his best so that the CDU party can succeed in future regional elections.
Laschet, 59, is the current premier of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and is a firm supporter of Angela Merkel and aims to continue with Merkel’s course.
The next German election is set to take place on Sunday, 26 September 2021.
