On Wednesday, Donald Trump was replaced by Joe Biden as the president of the United States, leaving behind him four years of political division and two impeachments.

Biden was inaugurated under a COVID-19 fortified U.S. Capitol, with face masks being donned by the crowd.

U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts swore in Biden, who had his left hand on a family heirloom bible.

Biden said in his speech:

“On this hallowed ground where, just a few days ago, violence sought to shake the Capitol’s very foundation, we come together as one nation, under God, indivisible, to carry out the peaceful transfer of power as we have for more than two centuries,”

President Biden will now have the job of establishing an efficient and effective vaccination drive for the United States, a country that has seen over 400,000 coronavirus-related fatalities.

In a farewell speech, Trump congratulated the new administration and said that he would make a return.

The United States is currently leading global COVID-19 cases with over 24.9 million infections and 415,528 fatalities, although India trails behind with 10.6 million cases and 152,906 deaths. As for the third-highest caseload and death toll, Brazil follows with 8.6 million cases and 212,893 deaths.

The novel coronavirus was first discovered in Wuhan, Hubei, China, on Dec. 31, 2019, and has infected more than 97.2 million individuals worldwide, resulting in over 2 million fatalities across 219 countries and territories.
