On Thursday, Angelo Caloia, ex-president of the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR), was sentenced to nearly nine years in jail for the embezzlement of millions of euros through property sales.

Caloia claimed that he was a victim of a crime committed by a separate group of people and was innocent.

Caloia has been sentenced to eight years and 11 months in jail and ordered to pay a fine of €12,500.

Gabriele Liuzzo, Caloia’s lawyer, was also prosecuted and sentenced to eight years and 11 months in jail and fined €12,500 for his part in the crime.

The two men reportedly sold 29 properties belonging to the IOR to themselves through offshore accounts and then declaring less than the final total of the sale.
