On Thursday, Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, Prime Minister of Mongolia, resigned following protests over a woman’s hospital care while she had COVID-19.

Protests arose after it was revealed that a COVID-19 patient and her newborn baby were moved to a COVID-19 treatment wing while wearing a thin gown and slippers.

Khurelsukh accused Mongolian President Khaltmaagiin Battulga of funding the protests and said that he decided to resign to prevent further disorder and riots.

Mongolia has seen a small number compared to neighboring countries, with a mere 1,592 reported COVID-19 cases and two coronavirus-related fatalities.

Mongolia reported its first case of COVID-19 on 10 March 2020.

The United States is currently leading global COVID-19 cases with over 25.1 million infections and 420,285 fatalities, although India trails behind with 10.6 million cases and 153,067 deaths. As for the third-highest caseload and death toll, Brazil follows with 8.6 million cases and 214,228 deaths.

The novel coronavirus was first discovered in Wuhan, Hubei, China, on Dec. 31, 2019, and has infected more than 98 million individuals worldwide, resulting in over 2.1 million fatalities across 219 countries and territories.
