Governors of around half a dozen U.S. states are pressing ahead with plans to launch a gradual restart of their economies despite concerns that rapid loosening of restrictions could lead to a fresh influx of coronavirus infections and deaths.
The push towards state reopening in Georgia, South Carolina, and other areas follow a wave of protests in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere demanding a rollback of regulations that have shut down industry and social life in an attempt to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
In several other, more affected states, tensions between President Donald Trump and governors have escalated over the role of the federal government in addressing a prolonged shortage of testing, regarded by experts as a prerequisite for minimizing exposure and enabling a safe reopening.
Health officials claim the United States tests approximately 3 million individuals per week to get a clear understanding of the spread of the virus, but states have tested just 1 million in the past seven days, according to the COVID Tracking Project.
