Wuhan, the initial epicenter of China’s latest coronavirus outbreak, announced on Monday the first cluster of infections since a lockdown was lifted a month ago, raising fears about a broader virus revival.
The new infections, add a layer of caution to efforts to lower restrictions relating to coronavirus throughout China as businesses restart and individuals return to work.
Wuhan registered five new confirmed cases, all of which occurred in the same complex. One of them was a wife of an 89-year-old male patient who registered as the first coronavirus patient a day earlier since April 3.
The number of asymptomatic individuals infecting others is not known in China as they only emerge on the radar of health officials when they show up as positive during tests conducted as part of contact tracing and health checks.
In comparison to the thousands confirmed each day during February, the number of new cases in China reported since April has been small thanks to a national screening, testing, and quarantine regime.
