On Friday, Peru prolonged its state of emergency and a national lockdown to counter the coronavirus pandemic until the end of June, marking one of the longest prolonged lockdowns in the world.

Announced by President Martin Vizcarra, Friday’s extension came as the confirmed cases of coronavirus in Peru increased to 111,698, the second-highest total in Latin America. On Friday, the death toll stood at 3,244.

Vizcarra said that the latest and fifth extension of the lockdown would include reopening of certain economic activities, such as household appliance sales, hair salons, and dental services more than a month after the previous lockdown end date of 24 May.

Vizcarra said in his announcement:

“We must move to a new coexistence, which allows us as a society to be more caring, more responsible, disciplined, respectful of the minimum standards of behavior so as not to harm the people we love the most,”
