On Tuesday, Brazil registered a record 34,918 new coronavirus infections, just one day after one of the top officials overseeing the nation’s widely criticized coronavirus crisis response claimed that the outbreak was under control.
Brazil is currently the second-largest coronavirus hotspot in the world, only second behind the United States and is rapidly approaching one million cases, although experts claim that the real number is likely higher due to patchy testing. Brazil also reported 1,282 COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, bringing the death toll in the country to 45,241.
