On Friday, Spain invoked a 15 state of emergency for Madrid following a sharp rise in new COVID-19 cases.
The move has been deemed as illegal, unreasonable, and catastrophic for the already destroyed economy.
Health Minister Salvador Illa told a news conference:
“It is important that the level of infection in Madrid does not extend to the rest of Spain.”
Except for non-essential journeys, the state of emergency would prohibit people from leaving Madrid, although work, commercial activity, and school trips are not affected by these prohibitions.
The state of emergency would also require hotels and restaurants to operate at 50% and close by 23:00. Family and social gatherings are also going to be limited to six.
